The power of the consumer
Nowadays, more and more people are buying sustainably produced bananas, pineapples and other tropical fruits. This increasing demand is crucial to sustain farmers whose production is more biodiversity friendly and close to nature. Farmers themselves, after seeing how nature is suffering locally, are pushing for this change. This is also becoming increasingly important for the retail trade, and more and more supermarkets are turning to products produced in accordance with ecological and social standards.
Sustainability standards such as Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, Sustainably Grown and of course organic products are becoming more and more important. However, there are still too many bananas and pineapples produced unsustainably. The excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers affect the surrounding habitats. Nevertheless, in the producing countries, farmers do not earn enough money to lead a normal life.
From Farm to Fork/ Del Campo al Plato, together with retailers in Germany, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, middlemen, importers and other parties in the supply chain, wants to explain to more people how important a biodiversity-friendly agriculture is.
